Sylvia Segeler from NaturNetze GmbH:

"Growing market for sustainable garlic nets in South America"

Despite inflation and a decline in purchasing power, sustainable net packaging for fruit and vegetables remains on trend, as the management of NaturNetz GmbH, founded in 2023, tells us. After the market launch of the nature-based nets last year, the compostable and plastic-free packaging solution has already met with an overwhelming response in many market segments. "At the moment, we are seeing an increase in orders for garlic. Of course, we also produce these nets from cellulose yarn made from Lenzing fibers in diamond and French mesh. In addition, the customer can decide whether they want the net on a sleeve, on a roll or loose in a box. Accordingly, the existing systems do not have to be converted, but our net can be used 1:1," says managing director Sylvia Segeler.

With its garlic nets, the young company has already managed to win over some overseas customers and thus establish a completely new business. Segeler: "At the moment, our nets are particularly popular in South America. Due to quality and delivery problems in other countries, a growing market seems to have emerged here." The demand is primarily focused on the common net sizes for three to six bulbs, she says.

Prevention instead of going nowhere
According to current media reports and market research, sustainability is less of a focus for retailers and consumers in times of recession and inflation. However, Segeler appeals to the industry not to bury its head in the sand and to prepare for the future accordingly. "Plastic is still the clear market favorite due to its price advantage. However, there is a renewed focus on sustainability, which in turn is due to the new legislation that will come into force starting in 2030. The Packaging Regulation (PPWR) will come. Those who are prepared then will have a clear advantage."

As a permanent partner of expoSE in Karlsruhe, the two companies Erich Baumeister GmbH and NaturNetze GmbH will once again take the opportunity this year to present new and proven products in the field of packaging technology to a specialist audience. "Like every year, we are looking forward to this great trade fair. Personal contacts of the organizer team, interested customers and an almost familiar environment continue to characterize the trade fair duo. Accordingly, we are always happy to be here," concludes Segeler.
