Week 43 Fruit Wholesale Market Report

Chilean cherries arrive in Guangzhou market, blueberry prices continue to fall

Chilean air-freighted cherries arrived at Guangzhou Jiangnan Fruit Market on Monday, kicking off the new cherry season and drawing attention from numerous industry insiders. Fresh shipments continued arriving in the days that followed, including Glen Red, Royal Dawn, and Black Rock varieties in sizes XL, J, 2J, and 3J, with packaging in both 5KG and 2KG options.

Traders report an increase in cherry production this season, with opening prices slightly lower than previous years. The quality of current arrivals is high, though some traders are cautiously observing market trends and may adjust prices based on sales performance. Prices have slightly dropped compared to the initial release, with 4KG boxes of Black Rock cherries priced at around ¥650-¥750 for 2J and ¥750-¥850 for 3J.

The volume of Peruvian blueberries continues to increase, leading to a decline in prices. Common pricing is now around ¥120 per box, with some brands maintaining around ¥140—15-20% lower than last week. High-priced sweet varieties also saw reductions as arrivals grew, narrowing the price gap among varieties. Yunnan blueberries have also decreased by about 10% compared to last week but remain priced higher than imported ones, with traders noting that the price cut has not significantly boosted sales.

American Red Delicious apples arrived last week, with traders noting improved quality and a price lower than the same period last year, selling for about ¥450 per box. Previously, a shortage of high-quality Red Delicious apples had led some buyers to switch to other origins or varieties. This season's batch, however, is seeing better quality, restoring interest in Red Delicious apples.

Meanwhile, the price of durian continues to rise due to limited supply. Thai Monthong A6 is now priced around ¥1000 per box, with some brands reaching ¥1350 per box, while Vietnamese Monthong A6 is at ¥880-¥920, marking a 10% increase from last week. Thai durian supplies remain tighter than Vietnamese, and prices are expected to keep

Chinese kiwifruits (left: green kiwifruits; right: gold kiwifruits)

Various Chinese fruits, including apples, kiwifruit, and Yunnan sweet oranges, are now available. The Ruixue apple variety has seen a lower harvest this year, driving up the price of gift packaging by about 15% to ¥70-¥80 per box. However, lower prices for Shandong's Qingsen apples have impacted Ruixue sales, which remain slow. Kiwifruit production has increased, but intense competition is slowing sales. Gold kiwifruit remains preferred over green, which is affecting the latter's demand and pricing.
