The summer season from Spain and Italy is gradually coming to an end at Exotic Roots. "Due to the increasingly colder weather, there's less supply from local cultivation in these European countries, affecting products like bitter melon (sopropo/karela), long beans, and various types of eggplants. We've already received our first shipments from Mexico. Sopropo, in particular, is in high demand among Asian, Surinamese, and Indian customers across Europe," says account manager Arjan Everding.
Exotic Roots was founded in September 2020 to meet demand in the exotic fruit and vegetable market. Four years later, Arjan looks back with satisfaction at the market's response. "Each week, we import from around 15 countries, supplying our wholesale customers across Europe with both full and mixed pallets."
Year-round yellow mangoes
With winter just around the corner, another busy period has arrived for the exotics specialist. "As we approach Christmas, demand for exotic, unique products always increases. We have a great winter assortment to meet our customers' needs. For instance, we're seeing growing demand for air-freighted mangoes. While the Kent mango is common in the market, we currently carry the yellow Rosa and Ataulfo mangoes from Brazil, with several arrivals each week. From Brazil, Mexico, Egypt, and the Dominican Republic, we can supply yellow mangoes year-round."
"We're also seeing strong demand for papaya, receiving both Golden and Formosa varieties from Brazil. Exotic fruits are becoming more mainstream, with products like papaya and dragon fruit appearing more often in supermarkets. While Brazil's dry, hot weather caused substantial damage to limes, we're fortunate it hasn't affected our papayas and mangoes," says fellow account manager Jonathan de Quartel.
"Our tropical fruit range continues to grow. We receive weekly containers from Costa Rica and are testing more products. Besides our main products, cassava, and eddoes, we're also assessing the quality of turmeric and sugarcane, for example. Our pepper range from Africa is extensive, including red and green Rawit peppers and Habanero peppers, sourced from South Africa, Kenya, and Rwanda. If climate issues arise in one area, we always have alternatives available. Exotic Roots is ready for the winter season!"
