In Srinagar, the expansion of Kashmiri apple exports to include Nepal and Bhutan, alongside the existing importer Bangladesh, has brought optimism to local fruit growers. The Sopore Fruit Mandi has emerged as a central hub for this trade, with daily dispatches of apple-laden trucks to these countries. According to Fayaz Ahmad Malik, President of Sopore Fruit Mandi, the addition of Bhutan and Nepal as importers marks a growing interest in Kashmir apple varieties, albeit in volumes smaller than those of Bangladesh. Malik highlighted that Nepal has been a consistent importer, and Bhutan has recently entered the market, showing a promising demand for these apples.
Malik anticipates a potential market expansion in both countries due to the increasing demand, projecting exports to surge by more than 50 percent in the upcoming years. He noted the preference for American apple varieties in Nepal, while Bhutan shows a keen interest in both American and delicious varieties. In comparison, Bangladesh remains the largest importer, procuring over three lakh metric tons from Sopore fruit mandi, predominantly of American varieties.
Surjit Kumar, a dealer from Nepal, emphasized the superior taste and quality of Kashmiri apples compared to those from other countries, underscoring the growing demand within Nepal. The Kashmiri apple's premium status is attributed to its distinct flavor and high nutritional content.
