Solomon Islands plans pineapple exports to Australia by 2025

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAL) in the Solomon Islands, under the guidance of Permanent Secretary Dr. Samson Viulu, has announced plans to export fresh pineapples to Australia starting in 2025. This initiative follows encouragement from the Australian High Commission, highlighting the superior taste of Malaita pineapples. The export process involves the use of two fumigator machines, acquired during the 17th Pacific Games, to treat the pineapples for harmful microorganisms. These machines, currently housed at Point Cruz Port, are awaiting installation in fumigator chambers to be constructed at the MAL area in Henderson, with the tender process for construction already underway.

Dr. Viulu outlined the logistical process, noting that pineapples will be transported from Malaita to Honiara in crates, treated in fumigation chambers, and then exported in crates across Australia. This move caters to the growing demand for island food among the Pacific Islander population in Australia under the Labor Mobility Scheme. Initially, MAL aims to trial the exportation of 15 tonnes of pineapples per month, with potential future expansion into bulk processing dependent on sustainable production levels. To support this venture, MAL plans to provide transport and freight subsidies to farmers, facilitating the consistent supply of pineapples for export.
