Altes Land: organic fruit grower Münch is harvesting apples and, for the first time, 'full moon pears'

"We hope to see a reasonable price increase as the season progresses"

This year, too, Bio Obsthof Münch has once again harvested its popular full moon apples. "The conditions for the harvest on September 18th could hardly have been better: ideal harvest weather and a clear view of the bright full moon gave the event a special atmosphere. We have introduced the 'full moon pears' (the Novembra variety), which we have now harvested for the first time together with the moon apples," says operations manager Marco Bartels. "We have harvested 30 percent fewer moon apples than last year. Accordingly, the moon apple is expected to be sold out in January."

The full moon apples are traditionally picked at night and by the light of the full moon. The fruits are known for their special quality and unique flavor and are highly valued by organic consumers.

Early end to the season
Overall, the organic apple harvest at the fruit farm is smaller this year than last. Bartels: "The fruit was picked and stored on schedule, and both the quality and freshness of the products are optimal. The fruit is very tasty across the range. For some varieties, such as Boskoop and Jonagored, the lower yield resulted in exceptionally large specimens. However, due to the smaller harvest volume, the range of the stocks is expected to be smaller this season. As things stand, we expect our warehouses to be cleared by June at the latest."

Adequate producer prices
With regard to price developments, the management of the Altländer family business is satisfied with the start of the season. "We were able to agree on a fair price level with our customers. As the season progresses, we hope to see prices rise in order to remunerate the growers appropriately and ensure sustainable organic fruit production in Germany in the long term," says Bartels in conclusion.
