Senasa and Cosco Shipping sign agreement in Peru

Peru's National Agricultural Health Service (Senasa) and COSCO Shipping Ports Chancay Peru S.A. (COSCO) have established an inter-institutional cooperation agreement. This agreement will facilitate the efficient performance of sanitary and phytosanitary controls at the Multipurpose Port Terminal of Chancay. The agreement was signed by the national head of Senasa, Vilma Gutarra, and the general manager of Cosco Shipping, Admiral Carlos Tejada Mera.

As part of the agreement, COSCO committed to providing a suitable environment for the fulfillment of sanitary and phytosanitary functions in the new port. According to the head of SENASA, these facilities will allow them to carry out controls on regulated agricultural goods, promoting safe and modern trade. Senasa will assign inspectors on-site to carry out various control operations, including phytosanitary treatments and inspections of plant and animal products, among others.

The Chancay Multipurpose Port Terminal will boost the Peruvian economy, boost agro-exports, and create new commercial opportunities. This terminal is expected to reduce costs and cost overruns in the market, benefiting the country's economic growth. With a capacity to receive vessels of up to 18,000 TEUS, considered the largest in the world, COSCO SHIPPING has ceded 957.80 m² to Senasa for exclusive use in the terminal's operational area.

This port will play a crucial role in importing large volumes of agricultural inputs, which could reduce prices and offer significant advantages for Peru's agricultural sector. Improved competition in the input market will directly benefit the country's farmers.
