The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Blue and Green Economy in Dominica has detailed plans for the importation of seed planting materials for white potatoes. A total of 1,160 bags of Spunta and Desiree varieties are set to be imported for the 2024/25 agricultural season. This initiative aims to support the cultivation of over 40 acres of white potatoes between December 2024 and March 2025. The areas selected for this cultivation are chosen for their optimal climate and soil conditions, which are conducive to the effective growth of these crops.
Over 125 farmers are expected to participate in this project, with support from the Extension Services Unit of the Division of Agriculture. This support includes the provision of seed materials, farming inputs, and access to expert guidance, training, and market access facilitation. Collaborative efforts with the Dominica Export Import Agency (DEXIA), WUSC Dominica, the Caribbean Research and Development Institute (CARDI), and the National White Potato Farmer's Cooperative are integral to this project's implementation.
The seed potatoes are anticipated to arrive on November 22, followed by a compulsory quarantine along with diagnostic and phytosanitary testing. Farmers interested in this cultivation are encouraged to pre-register by contacting their Regional Extension Officer or visiting their local farmer service center.
