Australian vegetable and herb grower Thorndon Park Produce has recently increased the acreage of rosemary on their site at Grawler River.
"This is a previously unused patch of land on the river border, it is about 1/4 of an hectare. We haven't used this land before as it's in a tricky spot to match up with our current intensive horticulture crops, however for a long term crop like rosemary it's ideal," explains Anthony De Ieso. "On farm we have patches of rosemary growing around the borders of our blocks. Close to a hectare total."
"Rosemary is a very tough plant so essentially it can grow anywhere, however a well draining soil is ideal as rosemary can get rot from over watering. We have always had rosemary available so we are currently harvesting our previous crop. This crop we have just finished planting will be ready in about 8 months to get the first good cut out of it."
Anthony said that the rosemary market is very up and down, as rosemary availability can vary. "However when its in hot demand you would want to have it. As it doesn't take too much input cost to grow and can grow anywhere it's a pretty good crop to have in the "break glass in case of rosemary shortage" spot on the farm."
