Dorin Bob, a Romanian entrepreneur, has initiated a project named Pădurea cu Aluni to supply hazelnuts to the global brand Ferrero. Operating a 460-hectare hazelnut farm in Homoroade, Satu Mare County, Bob recently expanded by acquiring an additional 211 hectares within the same region. The entrepreneur highlights the suitability of Romania for hazelnut cultivation, attributing it to the declining yields in traditionally strong countries due to climate change.
Ferrero is supporting the expansion of Romania's hazelnut sector by developing local supply chains. With a business volume of approximately $320 million in Romania, Ferrero provides technical support and expertise to Pădurea cu Aluni. Six years ago, Dorin Bob began his hazelnut venture by converting a former apple orchard in Homoroade, planting premium varieties from Italy and Serbia. The first harvest from Pădurea cu Aluni is expected in 2026.
Bob envisions Pădurea cu Aluni as a modern agricultural cooperative that supports the local community, small producers, and investors by providing a sustainable income source. The cooperative aims to offer technical, logistical, and financial assistance, along with expert guidance on establishing and maintaining hazelnut orchards. With hazelnuts providing a stable yield for 30–50 years and generating average annual revenues of $3,200–$4,300 per hectare, the initiative promises to bolster the local economy and agriculture sector.
