Cooch Behar sets price caps on potatoes and onions amid retail surge

In Cooch Behar, the district administration has set retail price caps for potatoes and onions at ₹30 ($0.36) and ₹50 ($0.60) per kilogram, respectively. This decision follows a meeting led by Additional District Magistrate Soumen Dutta, involving the Cold Storage Association and Traders Association, to address recent price surges in the retail sector. The Cold Storage Association noted that their prices remained stable, attributing the inflation to certain traders in the retail market. In response, a task force has been established to monitor market prices, with strict actions promised against any violations of the set price caps. Amlesh Goswami of the Cold Storage Owners Association emphasized the need to investigate the discrepancy between wholesale and retail prices.

The intervention followed Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's notice of the price hike, leading to the establishment of a task force by the district administration for market monitoring. Soumen Dutta emphasized the meeting's objective to maintain the price cap and warned of strict action against violations. Amlesh Goswami, from the Cold Storage Owners Association, highlighted the discrepancy between wholesale and retail prices, urging for an investigation into the inflated retail pricing.
