Liberia celebrates first harvest of orange-fleshed sweet potato project

In Liberia, the non-governmental organization Serving Humanity for Empowerment and Development (SHED), supported by BMZ and in collaboration with Welt Hunger Hilfe (WHH), has initiated and completed the first harvest of its Orange Fleshed Sweet Potato (OFSP) project in Margibi County. The endeavor, detailed by SHED Executive Director Joyce Q. Pajibo, represents a US$1.6 million initiative spanning 36 months. It encompasses 180 demonstration sites, engaging 4,500 farmers across Montserrado, Margibi, Grand Bassa, and Bong County, to introduce the orange-fleshed sweet potatoes to the Liberian market and diet.

Pajibo emphasized the project's potential to enhance nutritional intake and bolster farmers' incomes in the region. The launch event saw commendations from the German Ambassador to Liberia, Dr. Jakob Haselhuber, and Deputy Agriculture Minister for Planning and Development, Min. David K. Akoi, acknowledging the project's contribution to agricultural visibility and development in Liberia.
