Founded in 2017 by Willem Bijlsma and Bill VandenOever, BOLD Robotics emerged from the heavy industrial sectors of steel and lumber, channelling this expertise into innovative automation solutions for the greenhouse industry. "We realized the potential to apply our knowledge to address the growing challenges of labor cost and availability in greenhouses," shares Bill VandenOever, co-founder of Bold Robotics.
Customized solutions for a unique industry
"No one grower is the same, nor is their product or process," Bill explains. "A one-size-fits-all solution simply doesn't work. This knowledge has developed a new approach, which has helped us to build a reputation for trust and reliability, addressing specific challenges in both post-harvest operations and further up the production line," he adds.
The company played an important role in the success of Gourma's automation project in Quebec where its advanced robotic systems greatly improved the way basil plants were handled, significantly increasing productivity while preserving plant quality. The project shows how tailored automation solutions can help growers like Gourma address labor shortages and optimize their greenhouse processes.
Initially, the company focused on "low-hanging fruit" in automation, developing systems for post-harvest processes. These include potted plant packaging systems, automated labeling solutions, and integrated sleeving and case-filling lines. Over time, Bold Robotics has expanded its capabilities to encompass projects such as conveyor systems, herb harvesting and packaging lines, and custom solutions for potted plants and cut flowers.
Their collaborations with industry partners like Niagara Conveyors and growers such as Sunrise Greenhouses in Ontario have resulted in impactful, practical systems. "Our strength lies in creating solutions that fit seamlessly into a customer's existing processes, always developed with their needs in mind," Bill emphasizes.
Bigger space, better tools
In 2024, Bold Robotics moved into a new shop and office space located at Sunrise Greenhouses. The expansion allows for a more organized workspace and enhanced team collaboration. "This unique partnership benefits both parties and contributes to creating better-automated systems for the greenhouse industry," Bill notes.

The company also introduced several exciting innovations, including a flexible plug-handling robot designed for tasks such as transplanting, grading, and spacing young plants. Bill highlights that existing market solutions often fall short for growers, either due to inflexibility, high costs, or an excessive scale of operation. "We saw this as an opportunity to design an entry-level robot tailored to growers' specific needs," he shares, adding that the prototype was well-received at the Canadian Greenhouse Conference.
Advantages of being a local supplier
Operating from Niagara, Canada, the company's location offers a significant advantage in terms of service and support within the Northern American market. "We provide remote support that resolves 95% of machine issues coast to coast," Bill explains. "For the remaining cases, our team can be onsite within a day, often within a few hours."
The company also prioritizes sourcing all machine components from North America, ensuring spare parts are readily available. "This local sourcing approach not only benefits our customers but also strengthens our relationships with suppliers, enabling us to deliver premium support," Bill says.
Robotics in horticulture
Bold Robotics sees a future where automation plays a critical role in addressing the labor shortages facing the greenhouse industry. "Our mission is to have a Bold solution in every greenhouse in North America," states Bill. As the industry develops and changes, smarter and more efficient robotics will be important to meet the demands of growers and consumers alike.
Overcoming challenges
One of the main challenges for implementing robotics in greenhouses is the short timeframe within which growers need solutions to be operational. To address this, Bold Robotics focuses on creating flexible machines capable of handling multiple tasks, maximizing return on investment.
"Aligning with a team that understands the grower's unique needs and can provide the best support is important," Bill advises. He credits Bold Robotics' success to strong client relationships and remaining true to their core values.
Supporting floriculture and horticulture
Bold Robotics' involvement in the greenhouse sector does not stop by providing automation solutions. The company is a member of Flowers Canada Ontario, helping them maintain industry relationships and stay updated on trends. Additionally, they assist growers in applying for government funding, guiding them through the often-complex application process.
The company has also participated in discussions with research institutions about the adoption of technology in greenhouses and joined a panel on Canadian television to discuss advancements in agricultural robotics. "We're proud to contribute to the industry through these efforts," Bill remarks.
