Listeria risk prompts enoki mushroom recall in Canada

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has issued a recall for enoki mushrooms under the brand O'Ya Hoho due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The affected product, which was distributed in Ontario and Quebec, is identified as follows:

  • Codes: 240907

Issue
The recall was initiated due to test results from the CFIA indicating potential contamination. No illnesses associated with the consumption of the product have been reported so far.

Health risks
Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled but can still cause severe illness. Symptoms include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache, and neck stiffness. Vulnerable groups, such as pregnant women, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems, are at higher risk. For pregnant women, Listeria infection may lead to serious complications, including premature delivery, newborn infections, or stillbirth. In severe cases, the infection can be fatal.
