Thanksgiving leftovers and Christmas décor shift ad focus; weekly totals drop 32%

Ad totals decreased dramatically this week, as many retailers opted to extend their ads past Thanksgiving instead of issuing new weekly specials. A wide variety of apples were featured for making Thanksgiving pies. Cranberries, pomegranate, sweet potatoes, celery, onions, potatoes, asparagus, Brussels sprouts, and green beans were well-advertised for Thanksgiving dinner.

Raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries were also popular for fruit salads and desserts. Poinsettia ads increased as floral departments switched over to Christmas décor.

Total ad numbers this week were 217,746, a 32% decrease from last week's total of 322,192. The total for the same week last year was 21% higher at 276,283. The total number of ads broken out by commodity groups: fruit 105,345 (48% of all ads), onions and potatoes 22,272 (10%), vegetables 86,465 (40%), herbs 1,165, ornamentals 2,326, and hemp 1,338. The number of ads for organic produce was 25,509, 12% of total ads.
