Mariya Dermendzhieva - Triland

"We're adding lettuce from Egypt to our portfolio"

Due to high demand, a Bulgarian fresh produce trader has added Egyptian lettuce to its offering, says CEO Mariya Dermendzhieva of Triland: "We're adding a new line of products to our portfolio, with lettuce from Egypt. We can procure this product seven months out of the year. Adding the Egyptian lettuce will allow us to target the markets in both Europe as well as the Middle East. The push to start this new line was given to us by a salad specialist from UK, whom we have known for many years. He told us about the difficulties his company and many others are facing with Egyptian supply. Considering that we have had exclusive partnerships with Egyptian growers of various items for more than 15 years, we had the confidence that we can grow, pack and deliver lettuce that will cover all of the UK clients' requirements."

After the start with one variety of lettuce, Triland is already adding other kinds of lettuce to its offering as well, Dermendzhieva explains. "We started with slow but steady steps with the export of iceberg lettuce. We're currently adding little gem and romaine lettuce to our offering, which are available at this period as well. In about 25 days our Leonardo Radicchio shall be ready for export, as well as our curly leaf lettuce."

Triland only works with farms that have the right certifications, so that further export into Europe is not an issue: "The water sources and the spraying programs are very strict in our farms. Those are very important details, especially when it comes to the export of lettuce in Europe. We're able to secure contracted farming for all our standard lettuce and others that the clients may require, such as Chinese cabbage for example. Additionally, we're quite flexible to arrange loads with a combined manifest of different items, for any port that is within 5-10 days of transit from Egypt such as Valencia, Barcelona, Castelion, Malta, Genoa, Koper, Rijeka, Trieste, Limasol, Piraeus and Thessaloniki," Dermendzhieva concludes.
