The International Potato Symposium will focus on the potato. The event, to be held in Rimini from 6 to 8 May 2025, will be structured over several days, with in-depth technical and agronomic analyses, commercial evaluations and on-farm visits, with the participation of international operators, stakeholders and the sector's leading researchers.
"The potato will be at the heart of the event, with in-depth analysis of technical, agronomic, and marketing aspects, as well as preservation techniques. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with experts from around the world. The potato is a truly global product, ranking third in terms of cultivation, behind only wheat and rice. It plays a significant role in the industry, and its environmental value is also a key consideration."
"It is not widely known that the production of potatoes requires less water than that of wheat and rice. In fact, 400-500 litres of water are needed to produce 1 kg of potatoes, while more than twice as much is needed to produce 1 kg of wheat and 4 times as much for 1 kg of rice."
Luciano Trentini
"The potato is the third most cultivated species on the planet, with 5,000 varieties grown in 160 countries worldwide. The Rimini trade fair will host the Symposium during Macfrut on Tuesday 6 and Wednesday 7 May, with the third day dedicated to technical visits. The programme will include discussions on the future development of the sector, as well as an analysis of the fresh market and industrial processing of potatoes. One of the scheduled sessions will address defence matters, which have now become a priority issue for potato producers across Europe."
The second day will address commercial issues, including trends in potato consumption, consumer preferences and how communication affects the marketing of common potatoes, as well as those qualifying for quality labels. The second session will address the theme of innovation in supply chains, with a focus on varietal renewal and its relevance in light of climate change.
