Typhoon cuts Gukeng orange production by 20%, driving up prices

Taiwan's Gukeng Township in Yulin County, recognized as the island's foremost orange-producing area, experienced a 20% decline in output this year attributed to Typhoon Gaemi. This has led to a surge in prices, now reaching NT$30 (US$0.92) per 600 grams as the harvest season commences. At a recent press event, Gukeng Township Mayor Lin Hui-ju announced an orange festival aimed at boosting local tourism and sales, set to take place over the upcoming weekend.

The township boasts 1,032 hectares dedicated to orange cultivation, contributing to 25% of Taiwan's total orange production. The decline in production has resulted in increased demand, with some consumers needing to place orders in advance. Gukeng oranges are highly sought after for their use in beverages such as juices and teas. Local farmer Chen Shang-hsien noted that the harvest season is underway, with several orchards opening to the public for fruit picking during the festival. Wei Sheng-de, director of the Agriculture Department in Yunlin County, highlighted that Gukeng produces around 30,000 tons of oranges annually, emphasizing the fruit's nutritional benefits including high levels of vitamin C, fiber, and antioxidants.
