Strong pricing on Florida corn post-hurricanes

The corn supply out of Florida is a bit tight. "We're still dealing with some of the effects of the hurricane here and we're just getting to the end of those effects," says Robert Reesor of Rouge River Farms. "There were some planting gaps because of it."

Indeed, Hurricane Milton, the second of two hurricanes to impact Florida in the fall, had a greater effect on the corn crop and left some blown-down corn stalks and other damage. "However they both had impacts and they both affected the planting schedule," says Reesor.

With neighboring Georgia done its production, that puts the focus on corn in the southeast of Florida which will see a stabilizing supply by the middle of December.

Steady corn demand
Meanwhile, demand for corn has been stable following a bit of an uptake ahead of Thanksgiving. Another increase in demand is expected just before Christmas.

Not surprisingly, all of this is leaving pricing strong on bulk market corn. "I think pricing will stay strong, especially because it's very cool this week in southern Florida. So because of that and the gaps from the hurricanes, I see the market being pretty good until at least the middle of December," says Reesor.

However, looking ahead, while there will be gaps in supply, the corn quality for Rouge River Farms will be improving significantly in the next five to seven days. "We've dealt with a lot of small corn with tippy ears but that should be improving," says Reesor.
