Ukraine sees surge in potato imports amid poor harvest, market risks persist

This year, Ukraine found itself in a situation where it had to augment the supply of certain vegetables. Bohdan Dukhnytskyi, a senior researcher at the Department of Economics of Agrarian Production and International Integration of the Institute of Agrarian Economics, highlighted these developments. The first 10 months of 2024 saw a dip in the value of vegetable imports into Ukraine, impacting the volume of these imports. Conversely, the total value of fruit and berry imports remained consistent with the previous year's levels.

Notably, there was a nearly 90% surge in potato imports over the same period last year, attributed to an underwhelming harvest. Turkey emerged as a predominant supplier of vegetables to Ukraine, with Poland and the Netherlands also contributing significantly. Dukhnytskyi forecasts that the market might continue to face uncertainty and high risks through 2025.
