Lang Son invests $126 million in cargo hub to boost Vietnam-China trade, $66 billion in exports

In Lang Son Province, northern Vietnam, adjacent to the China border, a cargo transshipment hub is under development, with a budget exceeding VND3.2 trillion (US$126 million), aiming for a 2025 operational start. Hoang Khanh Duy, deputy head of the Dong Dang-Lang Son border gate economic zone management board, disclosed at a Vietnam-China export-import networking forum that the project's initial phase is in progress, with a completion target set for the first quarter of 2025. This phase spans 58 hectares within the Dong Dang-Lang Son border gate economic zone, providing transshipment and logistics solutions, including standard and refrigerated container yards, cargo warehouses, and a bonded warehouse.

The province witnessed an 18.2 percent increase in the daily average of trucks transporting import and export cargo, reaching 1,300 in 2024 compared to the previous year. The import and export value for the year is estimated at $66 billion, marking a 27-percent increase from the previous year. Key exports include durian, dragon fruit, and jackfruit, with significant volumes and values reported.

Luong Trong Quynh, vice-chairman of Lang Son Province People's Committee, emphasized the role of border gate commercial, economic activities, and supporting services as economic drivers. The province is implementing various strategies to enhance exports and imports, particularly of agro-forest-fishery products, alongside investing in infrastructure and traffic projects to ease goods transportation. The introduction of smart border gates for 24/7 customs clearance and strengthened partnerships with China's Guangxi Province are part of these efforts to boost trade and expand market reach, with a commitment to supporting investment and business operations.

A representative from Chongzuo City, Guangxi, noted the trade volume between the city and Vietnam reached over 129 billion Chinese yuan ($17.7 billion) from January to October, an 8.6 percent increase from the previous year, with Vietnamese fruit imports through border gates surpassing 700,000 metric tons.
