"Good weather has also lifted the potential for good quality and yields are looking to be normal"

The onion harvest at Premium Fresh in Tasmania is still 2-3 weeks away, but it is looking promising.

"We had a late start to planting," said Jim Ertler from the company. "This has been made up by some good growth weather in December, the good weather has also lifted the potential for good quality and yields are looking to be normal. As far as sizing is concerned it is a bit early to tell but it seems on par with predictions, we won't necessarily have large sizes but it will be reasonable."

Jim is expecting the Australian domestic market to be reasonably solid for 2025, "Wet weather combined with heat has made growing conditions challenging in some mainland areas and we expect this to help the market to firm. The export market may have some good and bad areas, but there will be a need for Southern Hemisphere onions. Demand may not be as high as in other years, but we expect it to be steady. Last year there was a bit of a false market which makes people nervous and we still have the issues with shipping to contend with. That said we have settled into difficult conditions and are making it work.

"To sum up; it is looking like a steady export season and we believe there will always be demand for good quality new season Southern Hemisphere onions."
