The government of South Korea has announced plans to strategically develop new apple cultivation areas in Gangwon Province as a response to climate change. This initiative is part of a broader agricultural and rural innovation strategy aimed at enhancing the sustainability of agriculture and transforming it into a future growth industry. The area dedicated to apple cultivation is set to expand from 931 hectares in 2023 to 2,000 hectares by 2030. The strategy includes the establishment of smart orchard specialized complexes, and utilizing automated systems to maximize productivity and reduce labor.
To mitigate the effects of climate change, such as frequent summer heatwaves and cold damage, the government will increase production infrastructure and preventive facilities. Crop disaster response manuals will be distributed, and support will be provided for rapid disaster response. A pilot project for summer cabbage will also seek new cultivation sites, aiming to establish production complexes on approximately 20% of the normal cultivation area.
