Over 90 percent of the fruits and vegetables in Macao SAR's leading wholesale market originate from the Chinese mainland, showcasing the integral connection between the two regions. The New Wholesale Market, situated close to Zhuhai City, Guangdong Province, acts as the primary distribution center for these fresh imports.
Daily, Macao requires approximately 250 tons of fruits and vegetables, with the market catering to nearly 95 percent of this demand. Market operators employ real-time data analytics to maintain a consistent supply chain. "The screen here shows vegetable sourcing, price monitoring, and daily quality inspections," highlighted Tang Huafeng, the market manager.
Lei Iong Fai, president of the Macao Vegetable Wholesalers Association, emphasizes the efficiency of the market's operations, ensuring a swift distribution process that has remained uninterrupted for 25 years, even during extreme weather conditions. The adoption of foreign agricultural technologies and seeds in the Chinese mainland has enabled a wider variety of produce to be locally available, reducing the reliance on imports from regions like the U.S.
The establishment of Gongbei Customs' new regulatory model in January 2023 has further streamlined the import process into Macao, reducing the bureaucratic hurdles by 99 percent and ensuring a steady flow of fresh supplies into the SAR.
