"Pink tomatoes in blue plastic packaging that looks like wood and smells like the sea"

The Cretan packing and exporting company Amountzas enters the new season with a special new packaging for its pink tomatoes. "Pink tomatoes have gained increased popularity among Cretan growers over the last 2 to 3 years. They are characterized by increased resistance to ToBRFV and they are greatly sought after in Serbia, Bulgaria, Kosovo, and other Balkan countries. We are very interested in innovating. So, we decided to present our first-quality pink tomatoes grown in Crete in a special, new, blue plastic packaging that looks like wood and smells like the sea," Mr. Odysseas Amountzas, owner of the Cretan company, says.

"We opted to use durable plastic, which is also suitable for printing our brand and the details of our product. The wow factor is that this surface, though plastic, looks like wood, thanks to the 'wood grain' texture that is formed. At the same time, the vivid blue color contrasts with the pink color of the tomatoes and strongly evokes the sea and Greece, enhancing the natural and authentic origin of the tomatoes. We also have an alternative packaging, which is inspired by the other color of the Greek flag, white. White needs to be impeccable, like the tomatoes we put inside," the Greek exporter says.

As Mr. Amountzas explains: "In this new packaging, we deliver two layers of large pink tomatoes, each weighing between 300 and 400 grams. It is a premium-priced product, based both on the authentic taste of the tomatoes, which are full of juicy flesh and seeds, and the quality and weight of the packaging."

As the weeks go by, more and more of this new packaging will be delivered to the Balkan markets. The Cretan tomato harvest has just entered a phase of increased production but still lags behind the normal level. "We are currently at 20-30% of our capacity, due to the delayed the plantings. Our production will peak by the end of January, reaching 25-30 tons per week. At the moment, the grower price for pink tomatoes ranges from 0,60 to 0,80 euros/kg. The Elpida variety stands at 0,80-0,90 euros, while Ekstasis reaches 1 euro/kg," Mr. Amountzas reports.
