The range of vegetable varieties for greenhouse growers is expanding. The seed company Med Hermes Vegetable Seeds is working to introduce new Solanaceae hybrids.
Meeting in Leverano (Apulia) at the Azienda Rosafio Gianluca
"We achieved significant results with the events dedicated to the presentation of new products in the cherry and smooth round tomato cluster segments," says Global Product Manager Andrea Restuccia. "The first two open days - one in Apulia, in Copertino (Lecce), at the farm of Gianluca Rosafio, and the other in Sicily, in Pachino (Siracusa), at the farm of Cannata e Tagliarini - were focused on the Adone F1 cherry cluster. The third open day was held in Tenutella in the Sicilian countryside of Butera (Caltanisetta), at the farm of Massimo Bonvissuto, where the Dorateo F1 round smooth cherry and the Adone F1 cherry were presented."

"All three events attracted a high number of visitors, who expressed a strong interest in our varieties," says the manager. Representatives from the farming community, including farmers, technicians, nurserymen, and traders from the target regions, attended Med Hermes Vegetable Seeds to evaluate the quality and characteristics of the new varieties. They observed that Adone F1 exemplifies an optimal balance of productivity, quality, and shelf-life, while Dorateo F1 was recognized as the pinnacle of our product line, distinguished by its high yield, compact size, and elegant bunches."

"The guests recognized the value of the genetics, appreciating the novelty of the intermediate resistance to the Tomato Brown Rugose Fruit Virus (IR: ToBRFv)," explains Restucia, "and at the same time, the productivity and fruit quality of the two varieties. Furthermore, guests expressed satisfaction upon tasting the tomatoes, noting their ability to evoke the ancient and traditional flavors and colors. This aligns seamlessly with the company's mission, which for years has been to promote the Mediterranean culinary tradition globally. The Adone F1 cherry, renowned for its neat herringbone cluster, boasts an elegant appearance and is packed with 14-18 fruits. It features a substantial and fleshy rachis that exudes a deep green hue post-harvest. The berries are uniform green (UG) with an average size of between 30 and 34 mm, an average weight of 20-25 grams, a bright deep red color, and perfectly round. The variety is known for its high quality, with a sweet flavor and a high brix degree of 7/8 Brix, ensuring excellent taste and shelf life."

"Dorateo F1, on the other hand, is a smooth, round variety, harvested in clusters or individually," he continues. "The fruit weighs 180-220 grams, is very firm, and is suitable for both the domestic and export markets. The plant is very prolific and yields are the highest in the segment. Thanks to its versatility, Dorateo can be grown with a wide transplanting schedule, allowing it to be harvested and marketed throughout the year."

The characteristics of the two varieties are complemented by a comprehensive package of genetic resistance, including intermediate protection against the aforementioned ToBRFV and TYLCV viruses and, in the case of cherry, high resistance to all strains of Cladosporium (Passalora fulva). Med Hermes Vegetable Seeds and its team continue their commitment to genetic research and the selection of new hybrids to offer the market, adding to an already extensive catalog of products in different species that guarantee excellent harvests in Italy and abroad.
