USDA grants transit permit for Santa’s reindeer, ensuring safe holiday deliveries

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) today issued a transit permit to Mr. S. Nicholas Claus of the North Pole, a global distributor of Gifts and Good Cheer, Inc. The permit will allow reindeer to enter and exit the United States and all territories between the hours of 6 p.m. on Dec. 24 and 6 a.m. on Dec. 25, local time, through, over, or near any U.S. border or port of entry.

"APHIS is thrilled to grant Mr. Claus and his reindeer this special permit once again, ensuring their smooth passage for a night of festive joy and goodwill," said Jenny Lester Moffitt, Under Secretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs. "We are proud to support this cherished holiday tradition—fueled in part by America's finest milk, cookies, and carrots."

USDA veterinary officials verified the health of the reindeer before issuing the permit. Dr. Rosemary Sifford, USDA's Chief Veterinary Officer, reported that "During their annual inspection, the reindeer were found to be in excellent health, fit for their demanding journey, and ready to prance with holiday cheer."

The health certificate for the reindeer notes that one team member, Rudolph, continues to exhibit a unique characteristic: his glowing red nose. APHIS reassures the public that this trait remains consistent with his health record and poses no concern.

As part of APHIS' commitment to protecting U.S. livestock, regulations are in place to ensure only healthy cervids, like reindeer, can enter the country. APHIS agricultural specialists have also certified all inbound gift wrap and packaging materials as fully compliant with current wood packaging material regulations, assuring the safety and protection of U.S. forests.

Additionally, USDA confirmed that Mr. Claus' sleigh will be cleaned and disinfected at the port of entry, including its runners and underside, to safeguard against potential livestock diseases. Port personnel will visually inspect the reindeer and verify compliance with biosecurity measures, which include Mr. Claus disinfecting his boots and washing his hands.

Mr. Claus also provided an advance list of what port personnel should expect upon their arrival. This includes a variety of food items, all of which come from approved locations and none of which pose a threat to U.S. animal or plant health.

"It's a team effort every year to make sure we follow proper procedures and keep everyone healthy and safe," explained Mr. Claus. "I am grateful for USDA's support in ensuring our holiday deliveries proceed without a hitch."

Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Bodhi Day, Noche Buena, Winter Solstice, Kwanzaa, Diwali, or other holidays during this time of year, USDA wishes you a happy and healthy season filled with traditions, celebrations, and good cheer.
