The inauguration of the Chancay Port in Peru, developed by Chinese enterprises, has introduced a direct shipping line to Shanghai, enhancing the transport of South American fruits to China. The first shipment, comprising over 20,000 tons of Peruvian fruits such as blueberries, avocados, grapes, and mangoes, arrived at Yangshan Port in Shanghai on December 18th, establishing a new trade corridor between the two ports.
Among the fruits shipped, "Candy Snap" grapes, known for their unique strawberry flavor, are highlighted. These grapes are currently undergoing the harvest season in Peru and were part of the inaugural cargo. According to Chen Xiang, commodity director of Riverking Logistics, the new route reduces the transit time for shipments from 35-45 days to just 23 days, which is beneficial for maintaining the fruits' quality.
The reduction in logistics time allows for fruits to spend minimal time in warehouses, thus speeding up their delivery to supermarkets. "Candy Snap" grapes, being new to the Chinese market, are subject to food inspections before they can be distributed for sale. The potential market performance of these grapes is under observation, with expectations of their favorable reception among consumers.
This new shipping connection is anticipated to bolster trade between Peru and China, with one vessel currently operating weekly and plans to increase this frequency. China remains Peru's largest trading partner, with bilateral trade witnessing an average annual growth of 14.6 percent from 2016 to 2023, culminating in a trade volume of 37.69 billion U.S. dollars last year.
