Mozambique boosts macadamia and lychee exports with growing international demand

The National Almond Institute in Maputo has released data indicating a notable increase in macadamia nut production and exports during the 2023/24 agricultural season, with a yield of 5,000 tons and exports generating over $27 million from 3,735 tons. Mozambique's macadamia nuts have found markets primarily in South Africa, China, and Vietnam.

The country has witnessed a steady rise in macadamia production, attributed to the entry of new commercial producers. Currently, Mozambique is home to 58 commercial enterprises focusing on macadamia cultivation, predominantly located in the provinces of Manica, Niassa, and Maputo. These areas account for the majority of the commercial production, with plantations spanning over 8,000 hectares.

In addition to commercial enterprises, 23 smallholder farmers are involved in the cultivation of macadamia nuts, covering an area of 478 hectares. The National Almond Institute is actively promoting the expansion of macadamia cultivation due to its lucrative potential in the international market.

Moreover, these provinces are also key players in the lychee market, with exports primarily directed to Western countries, including the Netherlands, France, and England, generating over $3 million in the last season. An upcoming export of lychees to the European market marks a significant development in Mozambique's agricultural sector, highlighting the country's capability to meet the demands of high-value crops outside the traditional harvest season.
