The Senegalese watermelon export campaign starts soon and will last until April, with stable volumes and prices, according to grower Mohamed Mbengue.
Mbengue says, "In the Niyaes region, northwestern Senegal, we'll start the first harvests on January 26. Our areas have remained stable compared to the previous season, which means that lots and lots of hectares of watermelons will be harvested."
The export campaign will continue until the second week of April, Mbengue adds. "It's a bit of an early calendar since it's still cold in Europe. But we're expecting exports to pick up towards the end of February and the beginning of March, with a peak of exports in April."
"Planted acreage in Senegal has remained stable, while there has been a decline everywhere in the region. We've had less rain, but that hasn't had any impact on the watermelon sector. The weather is a little warmer than usual, but without any negative effect," he continues.
According to Mbengue, "there's nothing to report regarding the phytosanitary situation. That's a very important factor in the success of the campaign, and we're pleased that production is good." In comparison, several other origins in North and West Africa experienced phytosanitary problems that led to the abrupt end of the watermelon season in 2024.
As for Senegalese watermelon prices, they are expected to remain stable according to Mbengue. "For the Durama variety, the average price last season was 0.95 to 1 EUR EXW and 1.1 to 1.2 Eur EXW for seedless crimson," he adds.
"Sizes are also expected to be very good, reaching up to 16 kg for the Dumara variety, and Brix as well, reaching up to 12-13 usually," the grower says.
Watermelons are grown all year round in Senegal, but the best window of the year to export is from February to April when the weather is warm enough in destination markets but just before the arrival of watermelons from other European or near-European origins.
