Anthony Rijnbeek, Origin Fruit Group:

"Declining grape market puts downward pressure on prices"

The grape market has shifted dramatically since Christmas. "At the same time, this wasn't a huge surprise, as everyone saw this volume coming," says Anthony Rijnbeek of Rotterdam-based Origin Fruit Group. "But it's clear that the grape market is currently under pressure, especially after the quiet weeks we had with Christmas and New Year's Eve falling in the middle of the week."

"Until Christmas, there were significant shortages in the market, but we shouldn't expect grape shortages in the coming weeks. There are substantial arrivals from South Africa and Namibia, while Peru continues to ship solid volumes from Ica, with the season from Piura nearing its end," noted the grape buyer.

"Quality-wise, the grapes are good. Initially, there were concerns about the grapes from Piura due to drought conditions, but I haven't seen any issues so far. Of course, the strong market helped, as the grapes didn't linger. I believe the South African grapes at the start of this season are of better quality than in previous years."

"The higher volume has put downward pressure on prices, particularly for loose grapes. White grapes, depending on their origin and variety, are priced between 16 and 20 euros for clamshell packs and between 14 and 16 euros for 4.5 kg boxes. Red grapes are priced similarly, though Red Globe grapes remain relatively expensive at around 23 euros."

Numerous promotions are planned in the retail sector for the coming weeks, which is great news for grape consumption. "Earlier in the season, when shortages drove up prices, it undoubtedly deterred purchases. That shouldn't be an issue in the upcoming period!"
