Mr. Nguyen Thanh Binh, Chairman of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, highlighted the growing presence of Vietnamese fruits and vegetables in over 60 demanding international markets, attributing this success to the diverse range of high-quality tropical fruits available. The export market has seen a notable expansion, with China, a major consumer of fruits such as durian, banana, and mango, contributing to significant export growth of 67% in 2023 and 27% in 2024, culminating in a record export turnover of 7.2 billion USD last year.
Official exports of Vietnamese fruits and vegetables have shown remarkable progress, with an increasing market share in key markets including China, the United States, and Thailand. Enhanced trade promotion and the leverage of 16 new-generation free trade agreements have been instrumental in this growth. The Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association's General Secretary, Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, emphasized the strategic focus on South Korea and Japan as potential markets due to their large populations, high incomes, and demand for agricultural products. He cited the expansion of grapefruit exports to South Korea as a prime example of leveraging logistics advantages and meeting the demand in these markets.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tung, Deputy General Director of Dong Giao Food Export Joint Stock Company (Doveco), pointed out the positive changes in the awareness of the fruit and vegetable supply chain within the business community. However, challenges such as small-scale and fragmented production, limited application of modern technology, and inadequate knowledge on fertilizer and pesticide use hinder the provision of a stable, high-quality raw material supply. These challenges, coupled with inconsistent output and food safety levels, underline the need for improved quality control and supply chain connectivity.
Addressing these issues, the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association has called for not resting on current achievements but focusing on enhancing product quality, safety, and compliance. The association advocates for the State to continue innovating mechanisms and policies to foster the sustainable development of the industry, emphasizing the importance of expanding official export markets and developing national standards for key export products to protect the reputation and enhance the value of Vietnamese agricultural products.
