Dutch company Cesil has entered into a commercial alliance with Chilean exporter Cespy Chile SPA for the seasonal supply of fresh Royal Gala and Granny Smith apples, which are destined for the European market.
Currently, Royal Gala apple production is concentrated in Chile's sixth and seventh regions, with exports sent to various international markets. "Europe holds an important position within Chilean exports, particularly for larger fruit sizes ranging from 90-100-110-120. The main export competitors are the US and Colombia, but Europe is a market that is phytosanitary easier and more transparent to manage," says Silvia.
"The majority of Chilean exporters have shipped large volumes of fruit to Latin America and India, which has increased demand for smaller-sized apples with good color. This diversification of production allows for a higher percentage of exportable fruit from a production standpoint," Silvia explains. Cesil aims to finalize programs early, as the spot sales market is becoming increasingly challenging. Additionally, the production phase in Chile necessitates formal adjustments in sales strategies for exporters.
"In terms of sizes, especially concerning Royal Gala apples, the challenges vary from year to year," Silvia continues. "In the European market, the largest percentage of production is concentrated in sizes 100 to 120. Customers with closed programs guarantee their supply, as larger-sized fruit is also the most consumed in Chile. Chileans generally do not consume smaller apples. However, market dynamics are shifting, with increasing demand for higher quality, larger sizes, and better condition, accompanied by highly competitive prices."
The harvest season begins on February 15. "Anyone interested in guaranteeing their supply needs to act quickly," she notes.
"Through this commercial alliance, the goal is to bring the end buyer closer by providing a sales platform for containers or consolidated pallets, catering to traders who wish to purchase smaller volumes," Silvia concludes.
