EU citrus imports rise in early 2024/25 season with higher volumes and price shifts

The latest update on EU citrus imports for the 2024/25 season highlights significant trends in the trade of oranges, small citrus fruits, lemons, and grapefruits. Data from October to December 2024 reveals shifts in supply volumes, key exporting countries, and price variations across the region, reflecting both market demand and seasonal dynamics.

Oranges:
EU orange imports reached 187,168 tonnes from October to December 2024, reflecting a 41% increase compared to the five-year average for the same period. South Africa accounted for the majority, exporting 154,601 tonnes, followed by smaller contributions from Egypt (3,248 tonnes), Türkiye (2,899 tonnes), and others. Average orange prices in the EU dropped to €93 per 100kg in December, down from €98 in November, with notable price variations among Spain (€76), Italy (€143), and Greece (€53).

Small Citrus Fruits:
Small citrus imports totaled 109,362 tonnes during the first quarter of the 2024/25 season. Morocco emerged as the leading supplier, contributing 41,657 tonnes, followed by South Africa with 33,384 tonnes. The average price in December stood at €119 per 100kg, higher than the previous season's €112. Italy reported the highest prices at €163 per 100kg, indicating strong demand for premium quality citrus.

Lemons:
Lemon imports declined to 54,949 tonnes between October and December 2024, compared to the previous season's 67,616 tonnes for the same months. Türkiye remained the dominant exporter with 39,771 tonnes. Average lemon prices decreased to €117 per 100kg in December, with Spain and Italy maintaining higher price points of €119 and €122 per 100kg, respectively.

Grapefruits:
Grapefruit imports reached 72,195 tonnes during the reporting period. China led the supply chain, exporting 50,835 tonnes, followed by Türkiye (10,633 tonnes) and Israel (5,411 tonnes). Average prices across the EU fell slightly to €117 per 100kg in December, with significant contributions from premium suppliers helping to sustain quality standards.
