Tesco: 'Strong volume growth' in Ireland driven by fresh food
Tesco has said that the performance of fresh food has driven "strong volume growth" in the Republic of Ireland with continued market share gains. The supermarket group has published its quarter three (Q3) and Christmas trading statement. Q3 covers the 13 weeks to November 23, 2024 and the Christmas period covers the 6 weeks to January 4, 2025. In Ireland, Tesco said that like-for-like sales were up 4.2% during Q3, while like-for-like Christmas sales rose by 4.8%. This means that like-for-like sales in the total 19-week period rose by 4.4% to over £1.1bln. Fresh volume growth was recorded at 2.1%, which Tesco said was supported by ongoing rollout of its 'fresh first' refresh programme.

UK: Food prices not going anywhere but up, warn shops
There is "little hope" of food prices "going anywhere but up" in the second half of 2025 due to changes announced in the Budget, a retail lobby group has warned. The costs of higher wages and National Insurance tax changes coming in April will be passed on to consumers, the British Retail Consortium (BRC) said. In the run-up to Christmas, prices went down in shops overall, but this was due to non-food goods deflation, BRC said. The pace of price rises for fresh food such as fruit and vegetables went up 1.2%, while inflation for store cupboard goods was 2.8%.

Slovenia: SPAR expands warehousing capacity, adds new stores
SPAR Slovenia is investing €40mln to expand its fresh produce warehouse in Ljubljana. The project is one of the largest infrastructure investments in the Slovenian retail industry in recent years, according to the retailer. With the upcoming expansion, SPAR will add 20,000 square metres, of which 12,000 will be dedicated to storage areas. This will increase the total storage capacity for fresh fruits, vegetables, and other perishable goods to 26,000 square metres. Meanwhile, ten new SPAR partner stores are opening in January in the Štajerska and Pomurje regions.

Sales of fruit and vegetables 'skyrocketed' at REMA 1000 stores in Norway in the first week of the new year, the retailer noted, boosted by promotions and consumer demand for healthy products. Sales of fruit and vegetables were 22% higher in the first week of 2025, compared to the corresponding week in 2023, while compared to last year, sales increased by 2%. The Norwegian chain started the year with the 'Crazy Weekend' promotional campaign, which saw the price of five selected fruit and vegetable SKUs reduced by 50%. Healthy products on promotion accounted for around 3.5% of total sales during the week, with fruit, in particular, seeing strong consumer demand, reporting a 28% increase in sales, compared to last year.
