Tajikistan reports strong growth in agricultural production in 2024

Tajikistan's agricultural sector achieved significant growth in 2024, with key crops recording substantial increases in production, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.

The total fruit harvest reached 823,000 tons, up 23.9% compared to 2023. This growth was driven by record yields of:

  • Grapes: 290,000 tons, a 50% increase, following the restoration of vineyards damaged during the harsh winter of 2022.
  • Apricots: 313,000 tons, rising 30.5%.
  • Apples: 277,700 tons, an increase of 22.3%, supported by new planting techniques and high-density orchards using dwarf apple trees.

Tajikistan also saw gains in vegetable and melon production:

  • Melons: Production grew 13.4% to 1.15 million tons, harvested four times per season on over 18,000 hectares.
  • Potatoes: Output climbed to 1.264 million tons, up 0.4%, due to expanded planting areas and improved seed quality.
  • Onions: A record 837,000 tons were harvested, a 7.3% increase, with more than 17,000 hectares devoted to onion cultivation. Tajikistan ranks second globally in onion production per capita (65 kg per person), following the Netherlands. The main export markets for onions are Russia and Kazakhstan.
