The innovative proposal of Agribiotechnology from Cesena (Italy)

An alternative for the storage of pears, potatoes, and other fruit and vegetables

In the agricultural sector, a significant innovation occurred with the approval on August 9, 2024, of the Ministerial Decree of May 30, 2024, by the Italian Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forests (MASAF) for the corroborant product 'Sunflower Seed Oil.'

The Italian company Agribiotechnology, based in Cesena (Emilia-Romagna), reported that sunflower seed oil provides unique protection by creating an external barrier on stored fruits and tubers. This barrier is essential as it removes oxygen from the substrate, counteracting one of the main spoilage factors during storage.

Oleophilic substances, especially the fatty acids present in sunflower oil, slow down the respiration process of plants. These fatty acids act by removing oxygen from the matrix of organic foods, thus helping to reduce cellular aging processes related to the enzyme system. The result is a significant improvement in the quality of refrigerated products.

The application of oil by thermal spraying in the post-harvest period not only minimizes weight loss during cold storage but also reduces the mechanical damage that can occur during transportation and handling; in fact, shocks, compressions, and friction can affect the shelf life of fruits and vegetables.

In addition, the product is advantageous for GDOs as it is a low environmental impact solution, free of harmful pesticides. This aspect is crucial in a context where the focus on sustainability and consumer health is constantly increasing.

"After a five-year absence from the market, we discovered a customer base ready to welcome our return. Agribiotechnology resumed its activities this year with good results, and the forecasts for next year are encouraging. The aim is to further consolidate and expand our market presence and make up for the ground lost in recent years," says a company release.

"It is important to emphasize that sunflower oil is not a pesticide and does not cause visual defects or alter the organoleptic characteristics of fruits and vegetables (smell and taste). Its approval has also been included in the Integrated Production Specifications of the Emilia-Romagna Region, marking an important step towards more sustainable and innovative agricultural practices."

"With the implementation of these new methods, Agribiotechnology is at the forefront of a field that promises to significantly improve the quality of agricultural products, and consequently, consumer satisfaction."
