Argentinean pear exports have undergone transformations driven by the expansion to new destinations and the need to adapt to quality and sustainability requirements.
According to Santiago Lyons, the commercial director of Fruit World, an Argentinean company that produces and exports pears and apples, the company has strengthened its presence in markets such as the United States and several Asian countries, while maintaining its position in Europe. However, this expansion has brought important obstacles, especially in terms of logistical costs, global competition, and changes in consumer preferences.
Fruit World's main products include varieties of pears such as Red Bartlett, Beurre D'Anjou, Packhams Triumph, and William's (Bartlett), and apples such as Cripps Pink, Granny Smith, Red Delicious, and Royal Gala. Harvesting takes place between January and March, and the company can supply the market all year round. However, some varieties, such as Williams, have more limited availability due to high demand.
"In the 2024 season, certain varieties had some size issues. This year, we expect to achieve a similar volume as last year, except in the Anjou variety, which suffered a 20-25% decrease due to weather issues that affected flowering and fruit growth. In terms of exports, the company plans to maintain a volume of 20 million kilos and approximately one million boxes," Lyons stated.
Fruit World's main markets are Brazil, Europe, and the United States, each accounting for a significant share of exports. Brazil, in particular, has an important weight in terms of volume. However, destinations vary according to varieties and sizes.
Some of the industry's main challenges are the increase in transport costs and volatility in the supply chain. "Logistics costs have increased considerably in recent years, affecting our operations," Lyons stated. To mitigate this impact, the company has diversified its export routes and collaborated with different suppliers. In addition, it has implemented strategies such as diversifying input sources and improving inventory planning and control.
The company has a five-year plan to fully technify its production and protect crops from adverse weather conditions through sprinkler irrigation systems and anti-hail nets.
"We must constantly innovate and adapt to continue offering differentiated products that meet consumer demands," Lyons added.
The demand for environmentally certified products has grown. "We have a comprehensive approach that includes the use of advanced technologies for crop monitoring, responsible agricultural practices, and certifications to international standards," he said. In addition, the company has invested in the development of more environmentally friendly packaging, in line with current consumer expectations.
"Despite the drawbacks, the future holds opportunities in emerging markets such as India and China, where the growth of the middle class is boosting fresh fruit consumption. Latin America also shows potential in markets that are beginning to value quality and sustainability," Lyons stated.
The company will exhibit at Fruit Logistica Berlin, in the Argentine Pavilion, Hall 25 - Stand B30.
