Ukraine plans private vegetable storage network to boost potato production and processing

The Ministry of Agrarian Policy has announced plans for Ukraine to establish a private network of vegetable storage facilities by 2025, engaging private enterprises in the development. Currently, large companies account for a production of 450,000 tons of potatoes, with the remaining yield cultivated by households owning 10-20 hectares. The strategy aims to encourage small farmers to market their potatoes to traders or large producers equipped with storage capabilities. The establishment of extensive vegetable storage units is expected to boost processing activities, as agribusinesses will be able to forecast the supply of raw materials more accurately, thereby streamlining production processes in their facilities. The presence of multiple vegetable storage sites in each Ukrainian region could also enhance retail operations, which presently rely on potato imports.

In related developments, Green Wave, a company specializing in the cultivation of lettuce, basil, and microgreens, has disclosed plans to initiate a large-scale farm in the Lviv region for the production of cucumbers, tomatoes, and hot peppers. This operation will utilize vertical farming techniques within a closed soil system, a cultivation method that optimizes plant growth in controlled conditions, enabling higher yields within limited spaces.
