The Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) has initiated a relocation of onion and potato traders from Yeshwanthpur APMC Market to Dasanapura sub-market, a move met with resistance from traders. The decision, aimed at decongesting the Yeshwanthpur area, has led to the exclusion of onions, potatoes, garlic, and ginger from Yeshwanthpur's list of regulated commodities. Despite the directive issued six years ago, a significant portion of traders remains at Yeshwanthpur, citing inadequate facilities and space at Dasanapura.
Traders have expressed concerns over the Dasanapura market's lack of infrastructure and small shop sizes, which they argue are not conducive to their business operations. The Yeshwanthpur Onion and Potato Traders' Association has voiced the need for facilities at Dasanapura to match those at Yeshwanthpur. The relocation was initially proposed to mitigate traffic congestion due to the daily influx of trucks to Yeshwanthpur from across Karnataka and other states.
The plan to establish a mega market at Dasanapura has faced obstacles, leading to the development of only 67 acres out of the proposed 300, with 212 shops constructed. Traders allocated shops at Dasanapura six years ago are now facing relocation again, a move that has sparked fresh opposition. The Dasanapura Sub-Market Traders' Association has indicated readiness to fight the relocation directive.
Logistical challenges for customers have also been highlighted, with suggestions for the APMC to establish markets in multiple locations across Bengaluru to allow customers to purchase various commodities in one place. The ongoing debate underscores the need for a solution that addresses both traffic congestion and the operational needs of traders.
