U.S. potato sales reach $18.2 billion in 2024 as volume rises across all categories

U.S. retail sales of potatoes remained strong from January to December 2024, with volume sales increasing by 3.1% and dollar sales rising by 0.7% to reach $18.2 billion. All potato categories experienced growth in volume sales during this period.

The three largest potato categories—chips, fresh, and frozen—recorded volume sales increases. Chips, which held the highest share at 37% of total sales, saw a 2.5% rise in volume sales. Fresh potatoes, accounting for 33% of sales, experienced a 3% increase, while frozen potatoes, making up 17% of sales, grew by 4.5% in volume. Canned potatoes, though a minor category at just 0.03% of total sales, posted a significant volume sales increase of 15.9%. These figures are based on Fresh Weight Equivalent calculations.

Fresh potatoes saw mixed results, as volume sales grew while dollar sales declined by 4.9% due to falling prices. Some fresh potato varieties, such as fingerling (11.6%), medley (10.1%), and yellow (5.2%), recorded increases in dollar sales. In contrast, russet potatoes saw an 8.8% decline, while white, red, and purple varieties also reported decreases of 10.2%, 9.8%, and 9.5%, respectively.

Fresh potato sales varied across different pack sizes. Volume sales increased for all sizes except those exceeding 10 pounds, which saw a 26.2% drop in volume and a 31.9% decline in dollar sales. In contrast, 8-pound packs recorded a 23.8% volume sales increase, while 2–4-pound packs grew by 6.8%, and 10-pound packs rose by 4.6%.

Both chips and frozen potatoes, the other two largest categories by volume, recorded increases in both volume and dollar sales. Chips saw a 2.5% increase in volume sales, with dollar sales rising by 2.1% to $8.8 billion. Frozen potatoes recorded a 4.5% volume sales increase, with dollar sales growing by 3.18% to $3.3 billion. Additionally, other potato categories, including instant, refrigerated, canned, and deli-prepared sides, experienced growth in both volume and dollar sales.
