This year's Egyptian green garlic season has kicked off stronger than it did a year before, says Amro Yassin of Egyptian produce exporter Stars of Export: "The start of the Egyptian green garlic season has been rather good, especially when compared to the start of last year's campaign. We can attribute the good start to high market prices of South African green garlic. With these higher prices in mind, it makes sense that overall demand for green garlic from Egypt has increased as well."
Thanks to the higher demand, sales levels have also been rather strong in the early part of the season, Yassin states. "For Stars of Export, the focus is naturally on the export markets. We mainly ship our green garlic to European markets, such as Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and Sweden. These markets have been performing well this year, as we've seen higher sales volumes at the start of the season, when compared to the start of last year."
The price for green garlic is getting lower as availability of the product grows on the market: "The green garlic prices have been high initially, and have now started to decrease slightly. This decrease is the result of green garlic being pumped into the market in large quantities. At this point, we're mostly looking forward to increased sizes of the garlic. I expect demand to remain high for the rest of the season. Egyptian garlic is available with large sizes," Yassin concludes.
