Brazil's Federal District establishes fruit sector chamber to boost 16.25% production growth

The Government of the Federal District (GDF) in Brazil has established the Fruit Sector Chamber of the Federal District (CSF/DF). This initiative, connected to the Secretariat of Agriculture, Supply and Rural Development of the DF (Seagri-DF) and the Technical Assistance and Rural Extension Company (Emater-DF), aims to engage in dialogue, monitor, propose, and implement actions to enhance the fruit production chain in the region.

Fruit production plays a vital role in the Federal District's agriculture, contributing to job creation, income generation, and food security, while supporting economic diversification and sustainability. The sector, however, faces challenges such as technological advancements, producer organization, marketing, and environmental preservation. The chamber seeks to facilitate coordination and dialogue among various segments, fostering joint solutions and strategic public policies.

Between 2019 and 2023, fruit production in the Federal District increased by 16.25%, reaching 37,615 tons across 2,169 hectares. Key crops include avocado, banana, tangerine, guava, and passion fruit. Additionally, the cultivation of red fruits like strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and açaí has expanded, driven by initiatives such as the Fruit Route, catering to the gourmet and international markets.

Rafael Bueno, Secretary of Agriculture, Supply and Rural Development, emphasized the chamber's role as a strategic platform to unite stakeholders and address sector challenges. He stated, "Our goal is to generate more income for rural producers, more jobs in the countryside and offer a greater diversity of products to the end consumer."

Cleison Duval, president of Emater-DF, remarked on the chamber's significance, noting it as a step toward overcoming challenges, fostering innovation, and strengthening the production chain. "With this space for dialogue, it will be possible to advance on essential issues, from improvements in cultivation, processing, and marketing to the strengthening of associations and cooperatives, ensuring greater competitiveness and sustainability for the sector," he noted.

The upcoming phase involves appointing representatives from Emater, Seagri, public bodies, and sector associations and cooperatives, ensuring diverse and legitimate discussions.
