The supply of avocados has been improving throughout January. "Peak sizes are 60, 48, and 70," says Calavo Growers Inc.'s Peter Shore, adding that there is supply coming from both Mexico and California. Compared to last year at this time, the supply is somewhat lighter, though the dry matter for avocados is high for Mexican avocados with good eating quality.
Right now, along with Mexico and California, Colombia is sending fruit as well that is largely directed to the East Coast. "Mexico had very good rainfall in the summer and growing conditions in the fall and going into winter were very good. Though the crop this year has remained small in sizing–the 60s and smaller have been making up the majority of the crop," says Shore.
Peak consumption months
As for demand, it's good as it tends to be from January to March for avocados and it's steady in the run-up to the Super Bowl, an event that sees high avocado consumption.
Looking ahead, "Growers have been harvesting strong volume for the last couple of weeks and we expect to have a good harvest going into our promotional period in February. Harvest will then ramp up again in March with more volume from California during the spring and leading into summer."
