Karlsruhe Wholesale Market:

Karaman Obst & Gemüse Großhandel renamed Karaman Food Trading GmbH

Since January 1, 2025, the catering supplier Baris Karaman, based at the Karlsruhe Wholesale Market, has been operating under the new name Karaman Food Trading GmbH. A logical step, according to the entrepreneur: "Our range has expanded considerably, especially in recent years. In addition to fruit and vegetables, we now offer our customers, mainly restaurants and system catering businesses, a wide selection of dairy products, flour, and a wide range of packaging materials. We will continue along this path in the coming years by offering additional product ranges."

Overall, Karaman looks back on the past financial year with mixed feelings. "All in all, we were able to increase our total sales by almost 5 percent, which is not a bad result in and of itself. However, in view of the expansion of our product range, we would have expected a little more, so the figures fell somewhat short of our expectations." Sales of fruit and vegetables declined again, but these losses were offset by the encouraging figures for the additional product ranges, he continues.

Baris Karaman (m) has been at the helm of the company for over 15 years.

For four years now, Karaman has also been offering a wide range of sliced fruit and vegetables. "We source this range directly from a reliable, regional manufacturer, which in turn allows for a certain flexibility. The best-selling items in this segment continue to include all types of cut lettuce, grated carrots, and a wide variety of raw vegetables," says the experienced wholesaler. Depending on the season, produce is mainly sourced from the region or from neighboring countries such as the Netherlands and Belgium.

Gloomy mood in the hospitality sector
From both a procurement and a sales perspective, 2024 has been anything but easy. Karaman: "Prices are significantly higher than they were before the pandemic. Compared to 2023, however, prices trended downwards again somewhat last year. Measured by the open items, however, we have noticed that the payment behavior of some hospitality customers is not particularly positive. In addition, there were two or three insolvencies among our customers last year. I estimate that the mood is not particularly positive among around 80 percent of the gastronomic businesses we supply. I also assume that the recession will continue next year and that there will be a certain market adjustment as a result."
