Agrieuropa

Not an encouraging situation for winter vegetables

"Although the start and the early winter campaign were not the best and left us bitterly disappointed in the last months of 2024, we can now be partially satisfied with the start of the new year. It is a pity that this recovery only affects certain references," says Alberto Nocera, president of Agrieuropa.

"In the case of valerian, we were able to make our voice heard and even obtain good prices, as the bad weather in France, one of the largest producers of this reference, led to a large crop shortfall. This situation turned out to be a market opportunity that we did not want to miss. There has also been a positive trend in spinach, for which we can guarantee the continuity and quality of production, as it is grown exclusively in the greenhouses of our farm. The situation for radishes has also improved since January, with consumption increasing and prices being adjusted by the various large retailers."

Agrieuropa is a company that grows, processes, and packs vegetables in the heart of the Pontine agricultural area in the province of Lazio, in the municipalities of Terracina, San Felice Circeo, Sabaudia, and Pontinia, over a surface area of 400 hectares, of which 303 hectares are covered with greenhouses and about 100 hectares are open fields.

During the winter vegetable campaign, Agrieuropa grows a range of small lettuces (including valerian, spinach, and rocket). It also grows courgettes, parsley roots, long turnips, round turnips, kohlrabi, radishes, and carrots, mainly for export. The company's summer campaign assortment focuses on reference products such as courgettes (available 12 months a year), cucumbers, watermelons, and peppers.

"For the other references, we hope that consumption will increase with spring," says Nocera. "What's more, if we look at the market trend for our references, I believe that the end consumer is paying more and more attention when it comes to purchases, and so far, looking at the last working period, I can see that there is a decrease in consumption throughout Europe."

The harvesting and marketing of spring courgettes has also begun, but we were expecting a better start to the season", concludes the president of Agrieuropa. "Now we are starting to prepare for the summer season, with the first watermelon transplants, which will begin at the end of February, followed by cucumbers and peppers."

Agrieuropa will be at Fruit Logistica with a stand as part of the Agropontino Agri-food Consortium in Hall 6.2.
