"New markets in Europe have started to import potatoes from us"

The Egyptian potato season has been on a stable level so far, says Gehan Elsherif, executive manager of G Fresh Export & Import: "Egypt is one of the leading exporters of potatoes in the world, with a significant portion of its crop going to markets in Europe, Russia, and Africa. This season, potato production has generally been steady, with Egypt benefiting from favorable climate conditions and advanced irrigation practices. The country typically has two main potato seasons: the winter crop, which is harvested from December to February, and the summer crop, harvested from July to September."

According to Elsherif, the demand mostly comes from markets they've exported to before, with some new countries in Europe also placing orders. "There has been strong demand from traditional markets, such as Russia and Europe. Demand is in fact so strong, that even new markets in Europe have started to import potatoes from our company. Naturally, given our location, there's demand from African markets as well. Meanwhile, the volumes are very similar to those of the last season."

The prices for potatoes have remained fairly stable, Elsherif emphasizes: "Potato prices in Egypt can be volatile, with prices typically rising during the off-season in the summer, and they tend to stabilize once the winter harvest is in full swing. As of early 2025, prices have remained relatively stable, although global economic factors, like transportation costs and inflation, have put upward pressure on prices. Additionally, fluctuations in the value of the Egyptian pound can affect competitiveness for the exports of the potatoes."

As harvest will continue for the next few weeks, the season is expected to remain on its positive course. "The outlook for Egypt's potato exports remains positive, with an increase in demand for Egyptian potatoes expected, due to their competitive pricing and quality. However, any changes in global economic conditions, shipping costs, or trade policies could affect this trend. Egypt's focus on diversifying export markets and improving agricultural practices will help maintain its strong export performance," Elsherif concludes.
