Processing potato demand rises, prices remain firm as growers face higher production costs

Demand continues to pick up slowly which is typical for this time of the year. Good demand is reported for peeling material as restaurant trade picked up after a slow period in January. Prices are stable and supply should be balanced for the remainder of the season. Growers are now planning for the upcoming season and once again the issue of rising production costs is a topic that is all too familiar to growers.

Across Europe, physical prices for processing remain firm with some increases again. Growers are hoping that the steady rise in values will continue in the same way that it did last year. In the U.K. wet weather is hampering early plantings. For chipping varieties, the last two weeks are traditionally the quietest weeks of the year, and this year has been no exception. Growers are looking to clear samples where quality and particularly fry color are starting to deteriorate but overall, values remain unchanged.
