Drug syndicates hide cocaine in refrigerated containers to smuggle into Sydney

Australian authorities report a trend where international drug smuggling syndicates conceal cocaine in refrigerated containers used by legitimate businesses for imports into Sydney. Last month, the Australian Federal Police and Australian Border Force detailed the interception of 40kg of cocaine at Port Botany, Sydney.

On January 23, Australian Border Force officers discovered 20 bricks of cocaine, each weighing 1kg, hidden within the walls of a container imported from Chile. The following day, 21 bricks were found in a second container from Belgium. These incidents underscore the exploitation of global supply chain networks, with illicit drugs and tracking devices concealed in the engine compartments of refrigerated containers. Upon arrival at the Port of Sydney, criminals attempt to retrieve the drugs by breaching docks, container facilities, or storage areas.
