Frutas de Chile has been monitoring the situation of the cherries aboard the Saltoro vessel to China, permanently and on the ground, to keep producers and exporters informed of what is happening. To this end, they are issuing daily reports on the situation.
"Currently, our general manager, Miguel Canala-Echeverría, is deploying a program of activities in China, in the towns of Guangzhou – Nansha, where he will meet with Customs and local authorities. To date, authorities have reported that 120 of the 1,360 containers affected have been unloaded and only 20 of them have been inspected. The fruit in these containers appears to be in poor condition and we are waiting for the lab results," stated Frutas de Chile on February 19.
"We consider it too early to issue an overall balance of what is happening with all the fruit, so we are waiting to see if Chinese Customs will release the containers. So far, no containers have been released to the market," he stated.
Frutas de Chile has scheduled a meeting with the consul and the commercial attaché of ProChile in China today to discuss future scenarios.
